March Challenge - Environment Creation

Well you all wanted it by the look of it, so you got it!! :D

Yep time to go let loose those imaginations boys and girls, so go an create an Environment.

It can be of anything you want - you can take something that has already been done say in a movie or game or you can create your own version of how you would have done it, or simply create an original from the darkest corners of your imagination.

I dont mind what software you use, Terragen, vue, Maya, Zbrush - as long as it looks good at the end of the day, and I would like to see textures and lighting thrown in too to make it as good as possible.

If you want to do a matte painting version that is fine, you could use a rendered Terragen/Vue image and put 3d objects into a 2d image like in one of the previous challenges and get it all to look good with the right lighting.....no photos though this time, unless you need a sky of course, other than that off you go.

Deadline is the end of March.

Please do the usual naming of you threads please: March Challenge - Environment - Your Name

have fun, and no arguing! We'll announce the prize out along the way, Im sure it will be worth it!!

cheers

Jay

Wow, this is really surprising because I really thought it was going to become another gamers/ animation challenge.

I already have an idea for my environment, but wont start it until I post my final for the feb challenge.

Dango77 28-02-2011 11:57 PM

Excellent! If I can find the time I'll join this one for sure, lots more modelling, yay!

darecarce 01-03-2011 12:06 AM

oooooo yea let's rock and roll baby :D

Jay 01-03-2011 12:16 AM

THX: Well I work in VFX so a gamers challenge would be pointless with me at the helm of the challenge - no disrespect to games artists though....

look forward to seeing the work guys - good luck

Jay

Not if that means you and your mates from the studio you work for :cold:

Jay 02-03-2011 12:16 PM

in a nutshell, nope!

Jay

honestdom 02-03-2011 12:21 PM

haha, no probs.

stwert 02-03-2011 05:33 PM

I think it would be really cool to do a pairs challenge, where a minimum and maximum of two SM members work on an entry together.
a) You'd get cooler and better entries, because two people might have complementing strengths
b) Much more likely to finish, because you wouldn't want to let the partner down
c) Teaches teamwork and production skills (rare that a studio is one person)
d) More people might enter because they might not be as intimidated with a 2-person team
Just an idea :) (Dom's really)

Jay 02-03-2011 05:53 PM

just not now, good points though

Jay

stwert 02-03-2011 05:55 PM

Why would you need help............dave

honestdom 02-03-2011 09:32 PM

haha, well i'm not sure if that was a question or not.

anyway, i thought i could help someone else (or a couple of people). I don't really have time to do it all myself. It would have been mutually beneficial.

it was mentioned before that in studios, there is never only one person doing everything themselves. Each person may have an area of expertise, or you may have a more generalist person. what ever their strengths, they work together.

Perfecto 04-03-2011 11:37 PM

From the looks of everyone's entry, I think I misunderstood the challenge. I was thinking it was more of a landscape challenge. I'm assuming it's okay to model objects and buildings and such? Basically model whatever we want?

Chirone 04-03-2011 11:43 PM

i thought environment meant landscape with objects such as buildings but the focus is on the bigger area, not on a single object that's in an environment

stwert 05-03-2011 01:54 AM

I understand an environment as a "space that a character occupies"... so the focus is on surroundings, setting, mood, whatever that may be.

Some Guy 06-03-2011 01:46 AM

I got a feeling this may have something to do with mwa?
I think an environment envolves everything in there. A stupid example could be this: A rainforest full of tigers would be seen differently to a rainforest full of fluffy kittens, even if it was the same forest! Charaters can play a large part In the overall feeling of an environment and i feel can be necessary to convey the atmosphere and meaning.

yes environment is everything that represents the/your surroundings. You can have buildings, trees, desert whatever you want....that is the idea, and that is the terminology used for such things.

Have a look on the job forums at job titles, environment artist, character artist, vehicle artist and so on...it will help you understand the way the industry is. You will have artists who specialise in these areas alone or you can have just 3d modeler/artist who will have a broader range of knowledge or skills that can do all of the above....
