March Challenge - Environment - GecT

So I read the challenge description and something popped and stuck right away. I'm leaning towards a home on a deserted island. A scenario that has transformed into a "well we're probably never leaving this place so might as well be comfy".

bullet1968 02-03-2011 05:33 AM

hmmmmmm two islands in the comp....Man Friday in nice hut Genny??

Joopson 02-03-2011 06:20 AM

Hmm, inspiration?:

In other words, I can't wait! I always love what you come up with.

Gen 02-03-2011 06:28 AM

Lol Andy, Mighty Boosh has to be one of my favorite shows ever!!

bullet1968 02-03-2011 06:31 AM

You should still do it. Yours would probably be a whole lot better than mine. I'm not really entering to win this challenge. Just really testing some ideas. So I 'm not really competing with anybody here.

Same. I'll probably take desert island thing on another time, there was another person who was going to do it anyway. I need the CG exercise!
------------------

I finally got started and I did some sketches and settled on this idea. Not an island but I wanted some water in there. The models are stand ins of course :). It's pretty much a remote marsh land village. There will be plants, grass, and little dingys and stuff.

Chirone 05-03-2011 08:17 PM

ah, there is some action on this thread!
looks like you angled the camera for this shot, or rotated the world

Jay 06-03-2011 11:59 AM

Nice start Gen

was wondering when it would get going, look forward to the rest.....

I'm not abandoning the challenge even though March is being a brat about it. Finally got to dig mah grubbeh mits in and started in on of the shacks.

bullet1968 13-03-2011 08:31 AM

Yes its looking the part now Gen...good to see you are still in it! Not trying to be me (sorry Surveyor mode) the X pieces actually would intersect with the bottom lats...and have another across the top...this gives strength...sorry being a construction boy it springs automatically to mind...good job though mate

cheers bullet

Chirone 13-03-2011 09:04 AM

so howd you place all your planks of wood at the top of the tower and put in all those curves into the building?

Jay 13-03-2011 11:59 AM

Good stuff Gen, the shack's looking nice and rickety.

Chirone, I cant speak for Gen on how she has modeled her shack but if it was me, I would duplicate the parts next to each other, with dupe special, then providing the model had some good division I would throw a lattice deformer around it and pull it around, this way everything will stay in position but become deformed next to one another

LOL I was thinking the same thing J.....well I couldnt remember the word 'lattice' I had 'hull' in the brain...dooohh

here Genny something like this...forgive my poor quality of work...but the Xmembers should look similar IF you are going for some realism....I hope Im not annoying you?

cheers bullet

Gen 13-03-2011 05:18 PM

Bullet, I don't mind the help at all. I've been looking at a ton of ref images and I've definitely seen those on houses but those often look neat, modern and sturdy. I want more of a dilapidated, slap dash shack with stuff just tacked onto it over time. More random pieces to come :D

Chirone, I used that script I linked you :3, for irregularity. Then I used the soft mod (with a global falloff so it affects everything around it) to sag some parts.

Thanks Jay! That's exactly what I'm going for ^^

Updates coming soon!

I suspected as much!

Jay, thanks for you insight

UPDATE!..finally.

Did I ever mention how much I loathe UV mapping? I know I won't have time to make all the little tidbits that reflect the daily lives of the inhabitants so I'll just have to roll with it.
I have quite a bit to do in a short time, like get those boats in there, spruce up the sky, assemble the mats for the houses (that's the big one), gamma correction, setup the passes and get it out.

bullet1968 25-03-2011 09:16 PM

Wow Gen!! that is certainly a difference...well done,,,I like it so far. I assume the plants were converted to poly's?? if so how did the PC handle the render? mine usually dies LOL

Chirone 25-03-2011 09:37 PM

oily rainbow coloured wooden houses?
either way, it looks amazing! good to see another entry that has colour to it!

Thanks! The grass patches are proxies, my graphics card would probably punch me in the chops for trying to have that many polys.

And no, they're not oily rainbow colored houses lol, its just the UV test texture >.>

screenies!

daverave 25-03-2011 10:48 PM

That looks nice Genny but I dont think you need so meny houses in the background..........dave

Edit:may be some land mass in the background

awwww, they actually looked quite cool from afar though :D

where'd you get such texture?

Gen 25-03-2011 11:02 PM

Thanks and you're right Dave, though its a lot of fun to see what the machine can handle.

I Googled and found some good ones but I liked this one the best.

Chirone 25-03-2011 11:09 PM

thanks, that's way better than the stupid one i was using!

daverave 25-03-2011 11:16 PM

Hope you dont mind Genny but another suggestion, you need some form of boats may be in the grass just showing.......dave

Edit: I look at thing in two ways does it look good and how does it work, yours ticks the first box but how do these people move around

Gen 26-03-2011 12:16 AM

I don't mind suggestions at all, atleast I'm getting feedback. Though I did say I was adding boats when I posted the last render :p

daverave 26-03-2011 12:25 AM

Sorry did not see that one..............dave

Gen 26-03-2011 12:36 AM

Nothing to be sorry about Dave. Well Maya just crashed sooo thats my signal to take a break.

Jay 26-03-2011 10:32 AM

Gen

Thanks Jay. I'll be doing multiple shots (I just have to ><) but the final shot will probably be wide.

Color correction tests. Don't know exactly where I'm heading with that yet but I'm leaning away from the red.

Some Guy 30-03-2011 12:41 PM

Wow, very realistic!
To me the last one looks best. Maybe a mix between the first and last.
Good work :)

honestdom 30-03-2011 01:17 PM

very nice, i like the foliage in the first one and the sky in the last. :)

bullet1968 30-03-2011 01:18 PM

I think the first one looks more raw and 1970's documentary type Gen...I like it......2nd doesnt do it for me...the 3rd looks the best for realistic colours from a modern camera...1st one is my fave...but agree with some guy if you could mix 1st and 3rd I recon that would be the top pick...well done mate

cheers bullet

Perfecto 30-03-2011 01:37 PM

Same here, the first one seems too green/blue to me and the last one doesn't seem quite colorful enough. Somewhere in between the two would look great to me.

daverave 30-03-2011 02:24 PM

I think some were between 1 and 3, looking great...........dave

Gen 30-03-2011 07:09 PM

Thanks for the input guys!

I'll admit I was torn between 1 and 3. The final will be a mash up of both but a little more subtle with the grading.
