Hey All

Its been a while since I did any non sci fi stuff (work related and personal). So I thought I'd keep the brain from going stale and do a portfolio piece.

Thought I'd do a 3d 'portrait' of the late great actress/model Audrey Hepburn. She was probably one of the most beautiful women to grace the planet. I been roughing it out for a week or so with alot of camera planes in the scene to strike a medium on getting her look right as best I can. I'll be doing lots of camera tweaks for a while yet as line up is critucal for this type of work, its actually pretty much creating a digital double minus a scan.

anyway I'll update as and when I can

Nilla 28-03-2011 01:48 AM

Great project, I look forward to this. She was truly wonderful "Breakfast at Tiffany's" is one of my all time favorite movies. There is a special kind of magic around Audrey Hepburn, so incredibly beautiful.

bullet1968 28-03-2011 07:30 AM

Never really watched her movies mate...but good subject...back when women had beauty that didnt need a trowel to make look beautiful...she was a natural...as was another great who just passed, Elizabeth Taylor...another beautiful woman....good luck with it Jay...I will watch...

cheers bullet

Jay 28-03-2011 09:20 AM

Thanks Nilla and Bullet

Yeah she did have that 'magic', no question about it. I'll try and post an update later, I'm still doing camera line ups and want to bring in more.

Bullet, Yeah you need to watch Breakfast at Tiffanys mate, and also catch My Fair Lady, that was the first one I ever watched, all good stuff, the good old classics!!!

cheers
Jay

I watched Guns of Navarone a couple of weeks back...my missus went 'uuuuuuggggggghhhhhhh'...LOL and Run Silent Run Deep a while back...man I think I posted it here somewhere...so much admiration for the art guys...no digital back then man...all made by hand...what a skill!!

Jay 29-03-2011 07:27 AM

Thanks Guys, well its going to take a while I think to do but also work work is ramping up for the final gallop toward the end of the film too, but I'll be doing as much as I can on this to keep my sanity from spaceships n stuff LOL. Hopefully update soon, tonight with a bit of luck

That really does look like the perfect topology head there and the likeness is already there - even at this early stage.

One thing though (nothing to do with your work) - I never noticed how big her nose is before - that front view image you have makes it look like she played rugby or something. I`m betting she would have that fixed if she was a film star today.

Jay 29-03-2011 09:04 AM

Cheers Tweety

Yeah it is I guess, but the good thing is it doesnt make her less beautiful thank goodness.

Cheers

Jay, When you start charater modeling the face do you start with planes or poly squares ?

gster123 29-03-2011 03:50 PM

Very nice Jay!

Looking forward to the rest of this one.

Bit of an update. Mirrored the geo across for more adjustments to cameras after initial start, head has been widened and the chin adjusted. Have adjust lips slightly too at the corners, plus bought the brows down more and added geo for later on.

Mesh has been pulled around a fair bit, so will tidy that tomorrow hopefully before cracking on again

cheers

G-Man 30-03-2011 02:26 AM

gster123 30-03-2011 06:55 AM

Very nice Jay.

Fkin busy as mate! Not had any time to use Maya in anger for ages!

Jay 30-03-2011 07:15 AM

Cheers G, get in there mate.

Cheers Steve, yeah its a little like that for me atm too, hence making myself do this.

I just posted this over at CG talk. A guy just commented telling me I need to adjust my image planes LOL, He then directed me to an image plane tutorial showing me how to make perfect line ups, since when was a human face perfectly symmetrical. I really wish people would read previous posts. LOL.

However I did point out I do this for a living so we'll see what comes of that LOL

anyway will post when I can later

cheers for now
Jay

Jay 30-03-2011 09:34 AM

hhahaha yeah its full of people who know everything LOL

Jay

stwert 30-03-2011 04:11 PM

Jay, when you say camera line ups and adjustments to cameras, are you talking about image planes and ref material? How many do you use?

Jay 30-03-2011 04:15 PM

Yeah mate you got it. Oh I use as many as I can, I dont rely on just the side and front anymore, its not enough if you want to do it properly. If I had a cyber scan of her that would be in there too - seriously.

cheers dude

Jay 02-04-2011 06:05 PM

haha yeah, I said what I did and he replied 'really? oh heres one I did earlier'

What he had done was fine in all fairness but, I cant justify his comments on a rough out.

Onwards.....

Small update.

Curves are there for placement of polys against the image plane lineups. It does take a fair bit of time to do as most of the images have different expressions and not all of them have lens info on them for the focal length, so you have to reach a fine balance. Anyway enjoy the update

and another view

murambi 03-04-2011 09:26 PM

I only use curves when doing hard surface modelling never thought of using them in organics cheers jay

Jay 04-04-2011 08:59 PM

cool murambi, yeah it works for me with organics for sure

mastone 09-04-2011 04:17 PM

Hi Jay

Looks like a great start and I know from experience that it is hard to get an accurate model from sourceimages with different angles/expressions and camerafocallengths.
If I may make a suggestion, I would really rough it in in Maya so that it more or less lines up with the image planes and then take it to Zbrush and move and shape different facial parts ( like mouth eyelids, ears etc) according to a particular photo which shows a particular facial part at its best.
This way you get to results much quicker ( at least I do) than fiddling in Maya rearranging edgeloops and what not.

Jay 09-04-2011 04:50 PM

Hey Mastone.

Thanks man and also for the suggestion, but no Im not doing it that way. Its just not accurate enough, speed isnt of the essence here for me. Having built digital doubles for film I've found theres no better way unless you also have the aid of a scan (which I used too) but the problems that can arise with scans are bloated meshes that again can cause inacurracies, but are great for blocking.

Unless Zbrush can import my maya cameras, images and curve positions which are such a great way of doing line ups for planes etc within GoZ and allow me to switch between them, then its definately a no no.

Relooping stuff for me is fine. If it needs new loops or old ones taken out for better form I can't do it in Zbrush either, so by getting it as near as damn it in maya from lo to medium res is going to be far easier with the soft mod tool for me

- at the end of the day theres no easy line of resistance if you are wanting to do a digtal double.

Update

Jay

tweetytunes 10-04-2011 09:01 PM

I know your going to prove me wrong somehow but she looked more like her in your first screen shots and that image is playing tricks with my eyes - but I know u know what your doing - I`m just saying it hard to see right now

Perfecto 11-04-2011 03:50 AM

Looking pretty good Jay. I was looking back in this thread from the start, looking at the changes and it's comming along quite nicely I think. Unless it's the screenshot angles, the area around the eyes especially to the outside of the eyes and at the top of the cheekbone look much better. I don't know how it is for you but when I get to the last bit of making those final subtle changes, it's crazy..I'm never satisfied. Even if I got it absolutely perfect, I'd still want to make more minor adjustments haha. Anway, from what you've done so far, I think it's looking great.

Jay 11-04-2011 08:57 AM

Hey Guys

thanks for the comments.

Tweety: LOL ahh no worries mate there, it does it to me while Im doing it, but Im sure it will come together soon enough.

Perfecto: yeah its generally the last 10% percent that is the make or break on this type of work

will try and post later

Jay

daverave 11-04-2011 11:58 AM

I think I would be happy with just 10% off mine are still a long way out, looking good.........dave
