Simple cube to sculpted face....

Been going at Z-brush pretty hard over the last 2 weeks learning as much as i can in the areas i have not touch so much. So wanted to test out what i could do with just a simple cube to start with no base mesh from maya. Still need a lot of work but well on its way.. I also have a cartoon fire Ant that i'll post up once i get all the textures done in zb this time no maya lol... Spotlight when it works for textureing is amazing...

Looking good sofar, although I don't get why you start form a cube. Appears to me like extra work, which isn't necessary.

Starting with just a cube helps develope your sculpting skills..

More efficient still would be a couple of Zspheres... or a squircle. I imagine with a cube, you just subdivide it about 3 times then start sculpting.... but still definitely good practice.

Nice sculpt btw.

I see what you mean, might be a good practice, but for efficient sculpting it is always good to start from a base mesh that supports the final product. I use subdivided cubes sometimes in other applications to get an all quad sphere, but in general I try to come close to the final shapes from the start. Saves you time and you avoid a lot of unnecessary stretching of the toplogy.

Anyway, result is pretty neat, keep it up!!! ;)

I still make most of my base meshes in maya... above was more of just practise time.

Here is the little Fire Ant toon, still have to color and texture the darker brown leather parts, then back into maya for MR rendering.

Looks like Leonard Nimoy LOL...well done Kurt...I agree it is efficient but you are right..good for the hand/eye co-ordination well done

Good start Kurt.

My only arguement here with cube sculpting in Zbrush is that you wont get decent edge loops out of it without resorting to retopologising which is a complete waste of time to me at the offset, its fine if all you are going to do is sculpt. You see alot of this on the Zbrush forums, where dude just sculpt, which is fine but if you want to animate it you cant unless you resort to the aformentioned retopologising

If I were to do a sculpt from scratch in Zbrush I would use the zspheres as they are excellent for Loops as soon as you start placing them and are completely editable all the way thru so you can jump from spheres to poly without much hassle.

Just my 10 pence worth of opinion

good job though

Jay

Ahmen to that!!! :) Ant's looking great, although I still fail to see Leonard Nimoy. Curious for the final result!!! ;)

YA i agree about using spheres it was more about playing around for a few hours then a real project to see if i could do something like i saw on of of thw ZB forums from a cube.

The Ant however will be a full project and was combo of maya base and Zb. Worked a lot more on the cloth parts today have to go back in and retouch some of the lower grey shirt and belt but learning alot...

Hey Kurt!

Just wanted to point out, as you've probably heard before, that all your models have certain similarities to each other. I've been following your work on and off for many years. I started out on this forum with your cartoon dog tutorial, what 4 years ago? And it's cool how all the work I've seen, or most of it, anyhow, is obviously from the same creator.

You have such a nice, sort of easy touch to your models that I, for one, have come to appreciate over the years.

I hope that's encouraging, it was meant to be, anyways :)

Kurt 05-04-2011 02:13 PM

Thanks all.. I do have a lot of other stuff that dose not have have the same feel but i dont post it much... I first love has always been the toons like in Pixar films, and How to Train your Dragon that look. I dig out my freaky stuff soon maybe..

Have the skin and cloth almost done lot of nice changes to the look and feel of them.. Might change the set a bit, i like parts of it a lot like the mushrooms and matchbox .. I could be just looking at it to much lol

stwert 13-04-2011 05:22 AM

Nice, I like it! Personally I think the mushroom stem could do with a lot less bumpiness, I think they're generally pretty smooth.

small update.. still adding stuff and arranging things

bullet1968 24-04-2011 01:07 AM

That really loks nice Kurt, you are doing a good job on this one mate....I assume you will add some animation to the little dude?

Kurt 24-04-2011 02:41 AM

I have not done much animation in a long time so most likely will just be a model turn table and the little scene i have going.
