Ive just picked out a few points :D

Maya now has four new rendering options!!! The improved software renderer, Mental Ray 3.2 (Fully integrated by the looks of it, please God please God lol), an all new vector renderer (woohoo) and an all new hardware renderer 20 times faster than b4....phew

The speed of the dynamics computation is upto a whopping 90% increase in areas...heehee

Maya paint effect can now be converted to polygons! luverly hehe

A new fur clamping system...oh boy


Have I missed out anything exciting? hehe

heh we both posted at the exact same time....

wow!!! flash export, vector rendering,, improved polygonal modelling, paint effects to polygons (there is something i want to tell you, but i cant, violates NDA laws), the dynmamics... phew.. damn these people, just when i thought i was having the latest version of maya.. boom!! a .5 added to my version!!!

yes... you have missed out the vector rendering option and flash export

nope mentioned vector renderer :D

but yes i forgot the flash exporter

I hope they release more info soon, as I really don't see any major improvments as of yet...

time will tell tho...

i wonder what they are going to add to unlimited that won't be in complete....

too expensive for the non power users and too few improvementrs in modeling section.

whaa?? on your compaq??? damn dude...

i've found that compaqs and HPs suck alot. My friends computer is a 2.53 mhz 1 gig of DDr and it runs slower than my 533 256(DDR)!

Hmm, I wouldn´t go as far as saying they suck. (Since mine doesn´t .. she still goes all the way to hold Photoshop in place) :p

I think what sucks in my case is the fact that I don't have the financial resources to keep up at the moment with Pc trends. I just have to work with what I have, even though at times it might become non-productive. In any case, I firmly believe I just need lot´s of RAM, and a better Graphic card.

900Mhz still works excellent with many Image editing applications.

By the way, since I bought it, I only had one HD drive failure. They picked the computer home, fixed, delivered it back in three days ... at no cost. So if I ever went for another, I believe it would be with another Big guy ... maybe Hp again.

As of your friend's computer, might be lot´s of factors at work there (benchmark it appropiately) .. however, I find it hard to believe.

i dont think MR can render fur, theres been no mention of it, only the support of subd's and paintfx, and lets not forget global illumination

yes, it can render fur... 99% sure

I think to make 2d aninmation is too easy in maya 5.
haha...

Maya 5, MR does not do Fur, Fluids or Glows. It does do Paint Effects after you convert to polys and it also does S/W particles.

you can do glows by adding a MR custom shader to the material. but I cannot remember the name of that shader.

I have maya 4.5 unlimited..... I am a lil bit confused now

Maya 5 is the software.
Maya Complete and Maya Unlimited are different packages of Maya 5. Maya Unlimited offers higher end features such as. Fluid Effects, Fur, cloth and Maya Live. None of these features are available in Maya Complete.

mmh..I have maya 4.5 unlimited...there is fur,cloth,maya live and fluid effects,too and more stuff.
So whats the difference to 5?

They have done a few updates to the fur and have added clumping to hair. whick allows you to give a very realistic wet fur look. They have also added a create pond whick uses spring meshes to simulate instead of voxels so the response is very fast. finally a wake emitter has also been added. You also get all the updates to Maya Complete.

Vector rendering and flash export also.
