I've decided to give a try at this one. I don't know if I am ready to model a toon yet, but what the hey.
I have no camera to capture a decent referance of me so I will work from what I have. these pics don't show my glasses, but they will have to do.
update soon.

here is what I have so far. Im gonna go ahead and start the head and work on a character plan tomorrow. I am using another referance for the head as I have not good side and front views.

mumbojumbo_13 05-05-2003 11:39 AM

cool start man good luck :D

EagleKing 05-05-2003 12:15 PM

thats a kick ass start. great work

howardporter 05-05-2003 01:10 PM

Nice!

How have you built that?

box modeling or extruding edges of poly's or both :)

looking good!

Thanks Yall.
Howardporter: this is split poly. I just now downloaded the cps tools and have not started using them.

EagleKing 05-05-2003 05:36 PM

what is the cps tool?

adldesigner 05-05-2003 05:56 PM

CPS=Connect Poly Shape

A script which got very famous during Maya 4.0 (If I understood correctly, it was integrated into Maya 4.5), which allowed someone to create a low poly object and watch it update realtime into the smoothed version.

Used a lot to emulate SubD´s workflow for people who only had Maya Complete.

Can be found in HighEnd3d I think.

EagleKing 05-05-2003 06:24 PM

Oo.....ok...I will take a look at this thingy.

hehe....adl...a new script to install :D

essahc 05-05-2003 11:39 PM

Yeah, Im stuck back here with 4.0 while I'm a po student. So I think I will learn CPS now.

said 06-05-2003 12:08 AM

Hey Essahc, sorry the curiosity, but what's a "po student"?

Mário.

mtmckinley 06-05-2003 02:02 AM

po = poor I would imagine. ;)

adldesigner 06-05-2003 02:23 AM

That would make me a po guy. :)

said 06-05-2003 02:27 AM

Sorry Mike, presume some of your english scapes my knowledge....

Mário.

PS. Besides, I don't know also what BTW means (swear I will not use this thread to ask this kind of questions anymore)

adldesigner 06-05-2003 03:16 AM

BTW=By The Way

Sorry guys, I take a lot of heat for sounding like a Texan so sometimes I play into it a bit. I forget that the rest of the world won't get the joke. It's funny that our accent is pretty much derived from the deap south's version of a the British accent of a couple centries ago. I don't know what went arye along the way.

Anyway. heres my update. Guess I should kill the caption but what the hay.

I have no idea how to do a mouth but Ill work it out. My pencils have me in headphones, as I don't really want to do my ears. but I may get more ambitous.:banghead:
:sleep:Time for sleep.

M 06-05-2003 06:07 AM

Hey man, its lookin awesome! I personally love what you have so far.. i suggest thoguh extending the forhead and squashin the face a bit... but other than tha.. keep it up :D.. (BTW, those eyes are awesome).

caligraphics 06-05-2003 07:08 AM

yeah.. if you make the head more "tall" it will get the more you look :)

said 06-05-2003 05:13 PM

Yeah, those eyes look very realistic.
I notice people don´t have much trouble doing realistic eyes, as opposed to doing realistic skin, for example.
How do you model them (eyes)? (how to get that translucid effect?)

Thanks.

Mário.

cb8rwh 06-05-2003 07:49 PM

is that bloodhot eye from highend? looks nice whatever!!

Vectorman 06-05-2003 10:20 PM

translucid would be if you were "half aware", transluscent means light can pass through it and i don't think thats waht you meant either. Although they are reflecting the lights and that looks cool.

GJ man, i really have to start this thing somehow......

essahc 07-05-2003 02:42 AM

Yeah. that is the bloodshot eyes from Highend. I think its a Denflo Shader. I plan to do my own later if I do texture. I just put those there for my own sanity. They are simple nurb spheres with the cornea pulled out some.

Thanks guys. I really need the advise.;)
I may not be able to do any work on this for a few days as this is finals week here at Austin Communtiy College and my Anatomy and Physiology Class is beating me to death. Life is good though, I've wanted to go back to school for 20 years now and finnaly get to do it. more later

M 07-05-2003 03:43 AM

hey, your acheiving your goals.. good for you! Wonderful to hear that someone got off their ass and didnt just complain :D. Congrats.

here is the latest. I took Carsten's advise and streched my head some. did some more exageration. next comes glasses and maybe ears. then a body.

M 11-05-2003 03:47 PM

Its lookin great! One thing i think you should quickly fix is that point you have on your chin. I realise the general shape, but it should be smooth.. it just looks like a problem with mirroring. So yea, bring that vert inwards a bit :). Also, i love the nose, but usually a big nose will come down on a straight angle. Your nose kinda curves inwards from the forehead.. then comes way out. If you take that area inbetween the eyes and bring it out a bit, i think that would look better :). But yea, its looking great

essahc 11-05-2003 06:30 PM

Thanks M.
I just had a few minutes to give this today....Mothers day you know... Just nubs for ears for now.

oops

EagleKing 11-05-2003 06:58 PM

how often did you smooth it? great work.

M 11-05-2003 09:11 PM

Hey essahc, lookin great, you fixed that chin ;). BTW, i know what you mean.. you cant be on the computer all day when its mothers day :).. that would be silly.

howardporter 12-05-2003 12:59 AM

You nailed the chin man! spot-on.

H!

essahc 12-05-2003 07:01 AM

EagleKing:

If I understand your question, I guess the right answer to that is...once.
I smooth to see my results. Then I go back to an unsmooth version to continue the work. for this work I've set the Subdivision Level to 2. Like the round nubs you see where my ears will be are just single faced squares.

Thanks for the incouragement guys.

caligraphics 12-05-2003 08:11 AM

As I see your nose on the photo, I would make the nose more square and more "vertical" .. I hope you understand what I meen ..

essahc 12-05-2003 11:24 PM

Carsten: Thanks, I think I get it. more soon.

finally had some time to spend at home. I spent the last 8 hours trying to learn how to make poly ears. I will have a lot of clean up when I smooth this so I guess I have a lot to learn still. I love seeing the other models run through this stuff so fast as it gives me hope that it will get easier as time turns into experiance.

I think that my noes is better now, thanks to advise from Carsten. Now I should freeze the head as Im spending too much time that should go to a body and accessories...

speaking of accessories. I found a good referance for the guitar that my nerdman comic will need. No I don't really own a 3000 dollar guitar, but this parker deluxe looks a lot better than my cheaper, Stratocaster. or my dreadnought.

howardporter 15-05-2003 02:31 AM

c'mon Strats are the greatest rock guitars ever!! :D just ask Jimmi Hendrix...oh I dont think he would be able to answer:D

I am betting that being from Austin that you have a sunburst like Stevie Ray?:)

that guitar does look sweet tho'. I recently bought a PRS...a week later my band broke up :(

H!

M 15-05-2003 03:24 AM

Heh best guitar is the godin lgxsa :D... well there are better.. but its a wonderful guitar! I think it all depends on your style.. for instance, i know a few people that are into guitar playing and they much prefer even the godin LG over some other guitars that range up to 3000 dollars :P.

no sunburst sorry. I do have an old poncho that he used to wear in interview photos, but it just looks like some old poncho. No Im more of a Les Paul kind of guy. That Godin that M speaks of is sweet (steel strints through the body, like an old L6 gibson). my strat is a cheap japanese squier with the fender bridge. I am used to floyd rose, kramers and les pauls. My real sweetie is a takamine Jasmane archtop jazz cut acoustic.

Here's what I did today....hair and glasses, merged my sides.
I'm having trouble with the ears. I missed some edges when I was merging polys so once I smooth my ears I have a bunch of border edges that will not merge. I did not I may have to go back to a earlier version and get them merged in low-poly. they look horrible.

Nerdboy gets a body. I really did not know how to start a poly body as I have never done one before. (Ive done three nurb figures but they became so problematic that I put them down for now until I know more). So I took a good look at what HowardPorter's been doing....:banghead: Man Howard You made it look easy:banghead: :banghead: Maybe someday.
But I was able to get something close to what I want. I had planed on leaving Nerdboy in spandex with a big "N" on the Chest. I will decide if I still want this if the body finishes better.
Any suggestions?

Here is a wire frame. You can tell how much of a que i've taken from HowardPorter. I am like so impressed with your work Howard. Hope you are not offended. I've learned more tonight about poly extruding than in the last year since I got this program.
