August Challenge - Witchy - Normal
I had planned to work on my first simple animation this month so I shall use this as the basis for it.
My entry will be 'Early Science' and will feature a mad scientist from the prehistoric era, his main tasks will be - reinventing the wheel, finding a creative use for fire that does not involve lightly toasting his wife, making interestingly shaped things from dinosaur bones, as well as attempting to cure disease and find 27 ways to creatively use the word 'ugh' in conversation. |
UGH!

Ugh, ugh ugh and of course, ugh! :)
|
remember that the focus of this challenge is environment-based. :)
|
Indeed I'll get round to it, but if I don't have someone to wander through it it doesn't feel the same :) And I am trying to play with animation this month so this provides a handy focus for building a 'set'.

Workbench WIP (textures need adjusting etc).

I love it! very original, as usual. :D

Hah, awesome desk man :D. What you have to do is cut out the middle dark wood on each end a bit and then wrap vines or something around the wood slab on the top, it will make it look like its more of a caveman table. The basic idea is great but i think you could bevel that a bit or something. The legs though are really nicely done. Keep it up!

Excellent idea M I shall do that to it shortly. Vines are a cool idea for tying things together, I was just considering how to make my bamboo test tubes stick together and now I know. Cool!
Quick shot of cave in progress. |
very nice!
|
cool man!!
|
whoah! nice textures!
|

Some prehistoric lab props; early test tubes, dino extractor etc.
I still need to do the vines holding it all together so excuse the floating bits :) |
That looks great, I'm looking forward to seeing how you finish this...
|
wow! witchy this looks great! and it's a novel aproach to the subject as well!! :D great stuff! it looks very flintstoney (which is a good thing!) ;)

Thanks, I am finding the Flintstones most useful :D
I am building a Hatchery (early version of Jurassic Park's) where the caveman develops domesticated dinosaurs. Quick shot of hatchling. The same breed of dino (a little larger) will also hopefully be forming part of the failed experiment entitled; "wow if I tie 2 bits of rock that look like wings onto my dinosaur, it doesn't fly when I chuck it off a cliff" . |

Progress shots and wires etc.

You never cease to amaze me witchy. How you can keep that awesome cartoony style but still add that much detail just boggles me. keep it up man.
|
really cool.... really cool man!

Thanks guys!
Early technical drawing board; |
That is so cool man. How you do it, I dont know. Hehe.
|
hah, that made me laugh
good job so far |
great stuff! only comment I have is that the bamboo supports look a little blurry compared to the rock texture and the board itself. Is it UV mapped or procedural?
Alan |
great work!are you going make a short with him?
|
Thanks all!
I hope to animate the caveman as part of my 'Witchy learns animation and throws PC from window' project. But in the initial stages I shall settle for a nice rig and maybe a walk cycle LOL. It's a UV mapped painted texture (over a pic) Pure, I think it is because I resized the poles after applying it (I reused the ones from the other thingy I built). I'll try remapping to the resized poles and that might fix it. |

Witchy, I love this stuff, it's so cartoony and... uhm... cute!

Thanks guys.
Fredrikkson, yes I am cursed with 'cute', but hell if you can't beat it, make it a cartoon lol. The only non cartoon thing I have made recently was for the last tournament. I attach a pic in my defence (not that it'll work, I think I have a entirely cartoon mind in my leisure hours), really ought to get round to texturing it properly. But enough! Back to tiny dinosaurs and giving my caveman a rather fetching snow leopard skin thing to wear. Cute calls me! And everyone has to have a style, right? (sob). |

Work continues with early bicycle. Doesn't have the things holding it all together yet, and I added a painted bump map to the wheels to make them look carved since the shot was taken, but you get the idea.

Other use for the new found wheel technology.

looking really nice, how about some stitching on the top of the umbrella (assuming it's an animal skin of some sort) ;)
|
Not sure I 100% like the rock texture. Looks more like a chunk of space rock with micrometeor impacts then normal earth rock ;) Love the wood and bamboo textures though :)
|
Thanks Pure, yes I am detailing the umbrella with some pegs and things. It has a painted texture which took me a while but you can't see it, sob. Stitching is a good idea though I shall revisit it.
Thanks Vampus, he probably got it when those spacemen you see in cave paintings came to earth, ahem. I'll look at some other rock. |

Few changes - new rock and new textures with some cave era stitching.
|
I like it! :D
|
I love the style witchy! This is looking great. sorry i looked long and hard no crits = )
|
hello, very nice work, looks like it will all come together nicely! keep up the good up
