Yep mentalray does do it, just not as nicely as some other programs. Maya does not recognize .hdr files, but mentalray does. So when you load it in, maya will give an error, but just ignore it. ...

You can hold Alt, and press the middle and left mouse buttons, drag from left to right to zoom in. You can also press 'f' to frame an object in a selected viewport.

3dworld came with a 1 year evaluation copy of motionbuilder 4 a little while ago (forget which issue) so I gave it a go. I can't give much opinion on version 5, but i'm sure it's not that different....
