Haven't used Maya or 3D programs at all for quite a long time. Meanwhile I finished studies and unfortunately there is not much time for this after work :(

you can start with a simple geometrie and:

(1) Window --> UV Texture Editor
(2) Select your polygon model
(3) Polygon UVs --> automatic mapping
(4) Polygons --> UV Snapshot

start with a cylinder, delete the unnecessary edges and extrude the "top face" as often as you need it to get enough edges along the...
