another thing you might consider could be your graphic card drivers I think, especially with ati cards. maybe try some other drivers if U find. I had a similar problem with an ati 9800. with nvidia...

Hi,

I modelled a simple polygon_lamp. Now I tried to UVmap that thing (automapping) so I can print it and use that as a reference for a real lamp cutting out of glass and soldering the pieces...

I made the stupid mistake assigning a file to the default_lambert1..

and now I can´t get rid of that file.
is there any chance to deselect the file?
- because I didn´t find out.

sounds logic to me,
but out of my rudimentary understanding for maya -
I try to work with it since two weeks now -
I´d say it was only a matter of incorrect UVmapping.

yep, it was automatically mapped by default I guess.
with spherical mapping it workes out well.
