You can reverse the way the F keys are used in the system perferences. (So you wont have to hold Fn anymore. You do need to hold Fn if you want to change the volume for example.)

You can select the mode by holding the RMB on the mesh. You are in vertex mode. By pressing space you can switch to different views

EDIT: pressing numbers on your keyboard also switches render...

To prevent this from happening you could make the helmet to the body so it's one piece. You can make the seam yourself.

You should try some UV mapping and texturing tutorials. You could use the wood texture you found and edit it a bit in photoshop (if you have ps.)

Good start. I guess you could model the handle as a separate piece and it makes it somewhat easier to texture.
