Oh BTW I figured this stupid problem out. When Maya 6 imports an OBJ you need to change its render stats for Final Gather rays to bounce. Just in case annyone else didnt know.

notice that the obj straight from zbrush doesnt create any occlusion on the plane beneath it. The sphere is there for control in the experiment.
