I know alot of movie characters are done with multiple UV sets so I don't think it should be a problem you may need to make sure that you know how to assign different textures to different sets...

Creat Menu - > Text -> Option Box

That will create curves for the letters you will then need to extrude or planer to make the text geometry.

This may help.

Edit Nurbs->Stitch->Global Stitch and just play around with the settings.

I wasn't putting software render down in fact it's my primarly used renderer it's extrealy good it's just as you you said when you need that extra bit of realism is when it comes in handy.

Just a thought.

Download PLE install it try setting up a basic scene with movement and some of the same effect but basically then try a batch render.

See what happens.

Yeah Mental Ray is good especially for realistic effect.

Maya Software is nice and fast though and can be used to preview most of your scene before doing the Mental Ray render.
