Just take that image into any image program (paint, illustrator, photoshop, etc.) and cut it into 4 different images, and save each one as front, back, side, top. Then open maya and import each...

Yes it is, I will be posting my finished product when I get there. I would suggest the tutorial for an intermediate modeler.

I will also add that the hyper-realistic tutorial is not a lot of help...

Just a suggestion...keep it all quads.

I am not sure if you are trying to make the geometry all triangles, but you have some really bad nonmanifold geometry in there.

Fur is by far the hardest thing for me in Maya. I have tried several times to get it to work out on my models with bald patches around the face and such...but it just never looks right.

Go buy "Learning Maya 6: Rendering" it has a good 6 page tutorial on how to make it. I would retype it but its really long...and you have to mess with all sorts of settings to get what you want.
