I just read on this very site, under the Nurbs and Curves head that adjusting the Extend Surface works well to hide these unseemly seams. I'll try this and get back tomorrow. Dont have Maya on this...

I'm so fed up with this problem that I almost simply went back to 3ds max. But, Maya has its own attractions. Please do carry on this discussion.
