hold down your W key and then hold down the left mouse, on the little marking menu that pops up turn it back to world or local etc.

try creating a nurbs square from the menu and try making that a panel, then garmet, if that works then try using curve snap, instead of point snap and vice versa.

are they *.ma files, or actually mel, you can open the script editor (very bottom right) and then go file open script and find the file, then hit enter once its loaded

you could put the expression in the particle shape that says if (frame > myController.somevariable) or you could make a direct connection to it with the connection editor.

you can display a selection handle for anything, display>component display> selection handles

or you could make a nurbs curve control and point contrain the cluster to it :)
