The Platypus has an incredibly boring body shape, and short stubby legs. It would be like modelling a penguin... the most boring exercise ever.

I say go for something with a lot of detail in it...

My first impression was that it was a mech leg, with some kind of shin guard thing. So, no, I don't think it is a bad start at all.

Some more vents or springs or obvious joints might help make it...

I don't think you've taken the character too far from the original at all. In fact I love how you've taken all the aspects of the game and integrated them.

I use a FireGL T2-128. Which is officially supported in Maya. It's only an entry level card, but seems to score fairly well on SpecPerf when compared to the Quadro 700 xgl.

$380 or something...

I think the quality of the VIP tutorials are just fine. Ocassionally it can be a little hard to make out some details when Kurt uses X-Ray mode. But 90% of the time the quality is fine.
