You could always have 2 planes, give them separate layers and have them directly in the same place. Lock them both as usual and only have 1 visible at a time.

Okay I admit the stroking is fun. Especially for zooming in maya, seeing as the stroke is the scroll wheel it has a ball bearing effect and scrolls in until you tap the service again to stop it. :)
