Hi there.

I have tried this in 3 different versons of Maya and everytime it works fine (2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020).

I select the faces for one half, "Edit Mesh->Detach" and then move the faces....

It turns out it was just a case of turning on the "Lock Sampling Pattern" in the settings - but no one on the internet seem to have this problem before - trust it had to be me.
