you gotta download the latest drivers for you graphics card...this problem is more common with the geforce cards check that up, i'm 90% sure thats the problem!

DELETING THE prefs folder

My Documents --> maya --> 7.0 (your version) --> prefs

restart maya

if u like how it looks in jpg format, render it like a jpg secuence..

in the render settings set:

Frame/Animation Ext: name#.ext

Image format: JPEG

Did you try what errethakbe said about the subdivision levels? Or erasing the prefs folder?

Erase the prefs folder located in My Documents -> maya --> 7.0 (or your version) --> prefs

and restart maya!
