No likely. Most plugins would need to be re-compiled under the newer API. Your best bet is to just download Bounustools for 2011.

What type of video card are you running?
What image format are you using and what resolution is your texture?

Try using another image format like tif and see if you get the same results.

you can use the maya toon feature.

It is located under the rendering menu set.

This basically use a ramp shader on a surface and applies a pfx outline on the surfaces.

Good work. In regards to your sky. It sounds like it is a Fluid container. This may be overkill. You can save a lot of render time by getting a nice hi-res texture.
