Well first things first is the interface, know your way around.. Then learn how to build things, changing their build options, moving points around..just you know, get the hang of the tool. Then if you want to focus on modeling area for awhile before moving on to say, texturing, you can..But id recommend you getting the basics of almost all of maya and then get back to focusing on one area.

But important thing though is have fun, at the same time work hard, at the same time dont worry, at the same time have patience, and be dedicated.
