Maya 6.0 and 6.5 CPU Maxed out when clicking isoparm

I'm having this strange problem. I've just started working with NURBS (I'd always used SubD and polys in the past). Anyway, when I click over to ISOPARM and click an ISOPARM and accidentally click just above or below that ISOPARM - the Maya process will consume 99% of the CPU. This will stay tapped out for quite some time. (In fact, I've never had the patience to see exactly how long it stays at 99%).
I'm using Win XP Home SP2.
Anyone else encounter this problem and hopefully have a solution?

Thanks,
