Your UV Mapo look OK to me, but I can see little bits there and there that could do with tidying up.

I also found that laying out the UV took ages, is this the norm?

Yes I am afraid. UV mapping a complex character will take sometime to complete. The lower the polycount the less time, the higher the longer.
