Anyone who does not use the fbx file format is not right in the head. This file format is supported across the board on Max, Maya, XSI 5+, motionbuilder and a few others inc. Blender as far as i can remember. I have also used the file format on an app call Endorphin to import and export meshes and animation to and from the two applications.

Really folks get using it, it exports every bit of data from Maya to anywhere that supports it, 100% of the time without issue. its the easiest way to export from maya to another 3D or animation appplication. And its free for any app that can use it.
