I'm glad the picture helped, not sure what kind of dog it is, I just googled "dog ears" and picked a picture that best suited what I was trying to explain.

I'm not too sure what it is about the bottom of his mouth, the only thing I can think may be making it look wrong is that if you were to close his mouth, his whole jaw would be too small to match up with his snout, leaving a large gap around it.
Maybe scaling the bottom half of his jaw out a bit, and very slightly squaring it off (not so it's square, just so it's not a curve, a bit like what you did with the inner ear)
