Ok mate some steps to create the stage...on the last pic select edges I have highlightes then Edit mesh>bevel and then play wiht the 'offset' in the bevel attributes to get the rounded edges then smooth it. Assign a lambert of either a soft brown or whatever colour you want...but it shouldnt 'drown' out your models colour if you get my drift.

C'mon mate...you can texture this...just UV map one small part of it and take it into PS or similar and have a go. If you want to see how to texture I got the Spitfire tutorial and that explains UV maps and PS texturing really nicely...not overly difficult when you see it up front.
