That is strange. Do you get any error messages?

Also:

1. Make sure it is a NURBS surface
2. Go into the Edit NURBS>Detach Surfaces>Options and reset the tool(I know there is only one option in there but just do it to be thorough).
3. Select an isoparm on the surface and try detaching again.
