Having problems building this model in this tutorial:

When I selected the edges around the neck, Maya wouldn't let me separate the head and body by choosing the Edit Mesh/ Detach Component command, then Mesh / Separate.
Instead it says "Separate works on selected objects or on faces from one single object" in the command response bar.

Is there another way of doing this, or am I missing a step?
