I think if you double click on one of the edges, it should select the entire edge loop, so that should be faster than select each individual edge... alternatively, you could use a side view and drag a selection around the edges, the Ctrl-drag the ones you don't want... also, hit g to redo the last command (i.e. merge in your case) which might speed things up a bit too.
