Brian used to use the "GI_Joe" script which simulates global illumination (sets up a dome of lights around the model)....search the forums for more info on it or google if you want to find the script. There are loads of old threads on it in the lighting/rendering forum.

You could also read up and use global illumination rendering with mental ray.
