Tried that. I even went all soft just to see and didn't notice a change there either. Weird. I also tried increasing the subdivision and then softening again, but that didn't change the way it renders. It may be that I just don't have enough experience under my belt to understand your logic, i'm brand spanking new to maya, so I'm quite sure I have some serious ramping up to do.
