.fbx format is for
*Geometry
*Skeleton
*Animation
etc...
this is the parallel format from Maya to Max and from Max to Maya it works perfect.... don't know what is messy to you
i did not google to see if there is a mel for direct .3ds exportation but i think there is no such thing.
I just get fin with those exportation with .obj for geometry and .fbx for animation ....
