Check the Plug in Manager (windows>Settings/Preferences>Plug in Manager), make sure Mental Ray (Mayatomr.mll) is loaded and is also set to auto load. I don't recall ever having missing materials before so I don't know about that, back up your preferences and try loading the defaults, see if that changes anything.
