You could first desaturate a bit that red K.

Second they´re supposedly only visible on microscope, so my best guess would be to try an electron miscroscope look.
(You know, that velvety look). I found thi simage in the lightwave tutorials center .. and I trully believe they could work with your animation.

Remember to add some heavy DOF too. Microscopes focus on really small units.
