I just have them in layers for the moment, there is no need to group them or anything like that at this stage because I am not animating it yet. As for cutting them, I haven't. I have been careful full not to have geometry inside but there are just edges poking through to the inside (if you see what I mean).

I have done this with many of my models and I have had no problems. If I were doing a human or something like that then it would be a different matter.

As for tearing of a panel you just bring up the two view screen and on the left select the view you want and just click Panels --> Tear off.
