Hi wgreenlee,
some of the shaders you can download are in the MB or MA format... some is also a plugin... if it is a plugin you just put it in the plugin folder, and load it in the plugin manager...
if it is a MB or MA file... you can import it in the scene throu the Hypershade...
if you make your own shader you can e.g. make a sphere assign the shader to it... and export it as a MB or MA file which you then can import into other projects aswell...
