I have had this problem many times. Usually, it's just a glitch. Sometimes you can fix it by restarting Maya. Sometimes, your computer's memory can be filled with corupt files and this may cause this problem. You fix this by turning your computer ALL THE WAY off. No restarting - you have to cold boot. After that, you simply turn it back on.

Another possibility is that you selected all the faces and applied the texture by right-clicking on the shader in hypershade and choosing "assign to selection." If you do this, Maya will still think lambert1 is assigned to it dispite the real texture on your object. To solve this, you just need to reassign your texture to your object without selecting faces. (just select your object.)

Hope this helps.
