I'm agree whit THX1138 now day the tools are very similar go around to the web and see what you can do with 3d studio max+vray or cinema 4d+vray o maxwell render....
I choose maya because i'm a sopporter of it and is suit for me.
I suggest you to choose the corret software that is suit for yuo...for esxample which work-flow is good for you.
My friend use lightwave because is good and rapit for modelling and have a good scanline render.
Download the trial version of every software and try them, than choose what is the best for you.
C4D=Lightwave=about 1500 euro
3dstudio max= about 4000 euro
maya complete=2100 euro
maya unlimited=7000 euro
Maxwell render and v-ray are plug -in and they cost about 600-800 euro.
This is the price in italy.
So choose it about yuor money...
And don't forget to study a lot for became a good render
