Importing the UV map back into Maya

Hi,

I'm trying to find a solution to the mess I got myself in which is as follows:
I finished mapping the UV's of a really complicated model which was hell and back for me and then I exported the snapshot. After that, I made the silly mistake of messing with the normals and the like without realising that now the UV map looked like a complete cobweb which is not reversible. (I only realised after saving the file)
Now I have the model of which I can delete the UV's of but I'm trying to figure out whether I could import the initial UV map I had saved out in the first place. The only solution seems to be transferring the attributes but that cannot be done in my case as it requires the mesh to be imported alongside the map itself.
Any of your kind thoughts and directions are very much appreciated.
