Wireframe/texture problem

I imagine this is a common problem, but after searching this entire thread I couldn't find anyone who had a similar problem, so I am going to post. I am including a picture of the problem.

Basically, I had a completed and textured model (the plane below). I decided to increase the size of the tires and the wheelwells. I enlarged the left side wheel and wheelwell (no problems there); the texture was unaffected. I deleted the opposite wheel and wheelwell and duplicated the one I had just enlarged. I went to my UV map and flipped the new UV's, placing them where the old ones had been. I then did a complete UV snapshot.

As you can see from the picture, the starboard wheel assembly has turned "one-dimensional green". Usually, this happens (in my experience) when you lose your texture, and is usually fixed by reassigning a texture to the object.

Needless to say, the object will NOT take a texture, even the initial shading group! I've tried several possible fixes, none of which worked.

The funniest part of all of this is that the plane DOES render! Yes, the "green" assembly seems to have taken the texture. I guess it looks annoying when in the work area, but if the final render works I guess I can live with that. I wonder if anyone knows what's happening, and if there's a fix for it! Below is the picture...Thanks in advance!
