Maya .mb files can only take so much, youll have to save as .ma files if your file starts getting complicated, cluttered or large. Of course this is assuming you used the .mb file type.

only problem here is that .ma files are pretty big.

At our company we use 250 gb drives per scene and only use the .ma files. We had too many problems with .mb files. As far as i know there is no way to repair the .mb files.
