I would go for F1 first, and follow the tutorials there first, then jump onto the Franky and Dog tutorials that Kurt did. Those tutorials are basic, but you would still need a basic grasp of the UI.

Then jump into the books, as some can be difficult and won't truely explain everything, for the beginer. Saying that the book Jay pointed out is very good and I also bought this book for Version 7.
