I think if you ve a 64bit processor you should use 64bit operating system with 64bit programs.
I had 32bit windows 7 with 32bit maya... i had to save every 30minutes not to lose my progress It crash like 10times a day.

now with 64 bit everything crashes like once or twice a months....
