rigging walkcycle depending on path langth

hello. i am breaking my head about the issue how to rig a crawling bug moving along a spline. the COG will be path constrained to a spline. how can manage to get the legs animation to be played depending on the moved distance, like it is done for a vehicles wheel for example?
