Over the last couple of years UV layout in Maya has changed for the better. In this course we're going to be taking a look at some of those changes as we UV map an entire character

There are plenty of tutorials on this sight and that can be found through google to get you started and to teach you the basics. Start with primitive forms (polygon/create) and use the transform tools on the left of your screen to start working.

just keep at it. If you want to do it, it will start to happen. It's really slow at first.

you might want to check out Michael Mckinley's book:

I am only half way through it at the moment, but it's really good.

Also, for me, Visual Quickstart's guide was really helpful.

I don't really have much experience with Flash, I am still pretty knew to all of this as well. I understand that Maya can be a bit of a drain on your computer, but I haven't had many problems myself.

To be honest, you are not going to learn maya in a couple of weeks. It can be very confusing when you first start.

Think maya eats up your graphics when its running, as well as ram when you run simulations
