Odd artefacts

Just making a a new head.

I get strange artefacts on my head. When I soften normals it makes it worse.

Can anyone help?

post a wireframe, it looks like a non planar polygon. Try splitting the face and seeing if that helps

also, it might not smooth out correctly if you have some edges or vertices not connected how they should be. Try moving a few of the faces way out of place just to check. (then undo of course afterwards) You can select two vertices and choose EditPolygons>MergeVertices to merge them.
