Problem with rendering fur

Hello everyone!

I´m having a slight problem with "fur" on my character. The charater has fur all over, but I also have another separate object in my scene (a cap on his head without any connection with the actual character). Everything seems to be working fine until i "smooth" this object (the cap) and render my scene. What happends then is that the fur disappears. Everything is done with polygons, but if I transform the cap to NURBS the fur suddenly comes back. Enyone has any explanation to this problem?

(I don´t want to switch to NURBS)

Kind regards
Peter
