Vertices are merged but edges aren't

I have a picture here of my low poly head and ear looking from the inside of the head. Where the red band is is where the ear and head meet, I made some extra cuts in the head to give places for the ear to connect to. I then snapped the corresponding vertes to each other then I merged them. By merging all of the vertes I should now have a continuous surface, but I don't. Even though when I select each vert along that line, each is a single vert and moves the geometry on each side of the split, the edges are considered seperate and when smoothed show the line between them. You can see the dark green of the edge since I have the append to polygon tool selected. Any suggestions on what to do? Has anyone seen this before. This is the way I have merged other parts in the past and not had any problems, I am stumped on this. Thanks for any help.

I figured it out. My normals were reversed.
