is there a way to freeze a nurb surface

hi all,
i'm using some nurbs planes with textures as construction planes and i would like to know if there is a way (i'm sure there is !) to make them non selectable or transformable.

Display -> Object Display -> Template
and to reverse the operation
Display -> Object Display -> Untemplate
But that makes the object showing as wireframe.

Better way would be to create a layer. Put the planes in the layer and set it's mode to R (whatever it stands for?)
